ABSTRACT

Availability analysis was performed for an offshore drilling system whose operational modes are transited to another by external factors as well as by internal equipment failure. The operation of the system is composed of the normal and emergency operation conditions each of which may have different system configuration from each operational mode. A new approach based on Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) is described in this study to estimate the availability integrating the component or sub-system failure and transition between the operational modes. In the availability assessment, the simulations not only create the realistic lifetime scenario, but also provide information of the main performance including the expected number of transitions, component criticality, and blowout frequency.
