ABSTRACT

An important part of PRAs for hazardous industries is to properly account for the influence of people and organisations on the technical system performance. In recent years, the need to explicitly account for the impact of Organisational Factors (OFs) in PRAs has been emphasised. One of the modelling challenges is the dynamic nature of organisations. In this paper the use of the System Dynamics (SD) approach to model and analyse the dynamic impact of OFs on the human and technical system performance in the context of PRAs is considered. To illustrate how SD could be used for this purpose, the SD model that was developed by the authors to analyse the factors affecting the availability of emergency power alternators at a process plant is presented.
