ABSTRACT

All organisations face the challenge of improving compliance, with local supervision and leadership being key elements in any compliance enhancement process. Greenstreet Berman Ltd has developed and delivered a range of programmes within the UK utility industry focused on tackling procedural team non-compliance through effective supervision and leadership. This paper focuses on the development and implementation of two non-technical skills programmes, developed as part of the ‘Achieving Compliance Through People’ initiative. Both programmes focus on ensuring that supervisors and leaders can effectively identify, challenge and rectify procedural non-compliance and improve occupational health and safety and process safety. This paper provides an overview of the two programmes, discusses how the programmes were developed; details the implementation of each programme and describes the benefits of the two programmes. Recommendations and conclusions are then presented for practice within the context of high hazard industries.
