ABSTRACT

The continuing public fascination with the sinking of RMS Titanic more than a century ago is shown by the huge interest on discussion forums on the Internet, the rebuilding of a new Titanic cruise vessel and, for example, that more than 830,000 people passed through “Titanic: The Exhibition” during its six-month run at Florida International Museum in 1998, the most popular exhibition at the museum ever. In this paper the Titanic accident is analysed using risk and accident theories. The questions discussed are “Could a Titanic accident happen today?"’ and “Could the Titanic accident have been foreseen?”
