ABSTRACT

The use of handheld blood glucose meters is now widespread in developed countries and occurs not only within the diabetic population in the home environment, but also in a variety of professional health care settings. Although there is certainly controversy concerning the use of these devices with critically ill patients [1,2], it is apparent that penetration into these settings is increasing. Critical care and neonatal settings are even more sensitive to clinical accuracy than the outpatient and doctor’s office professional segments, where these devices already see a high level of acceptance and use.
