Designing adaptive structures for whole life energy savings

The strategy is that the active elements (actuators) are only activated for compensation of the displacements and internal forces when the loads reach a certain threshold. Therefore operational energy is only used when necessary. For active structures to save energy, the design should be governed by large loading events that have a small probability of occurrence (rare storms, earthquakes).
