ABSTRACT: This paper propose a method to assess damages in beams, based on the fact that frequency shifts can be described mathematically using two terms, one defining damage location and one damage depth. It was demonstrated that series of local values of mode shape curvature squares of several bending vibration modes uniquely characterize the damage location; by comparing all possible damage scenarios with the measured relative frequency shifts for that bending vibration modes, the location is found when the calculated series fit the measured one. The second step is to find the depth of damage placed on the identified location, producing the measured frequency change.
