ABSTRACT

It is possible to define as energy harvesting on a meso-scale all those applications of energy harvesting that have as an objective the supply of power to systems otherwise powered by the electrical grid. The energy produced in excess could supply the electrical grid. The energy sustainability of houses, structures and infrastructures provide an example of meso-scale energy harvesting implementation. Currently the produced energy is in the range of W/kWs. In the recent years, there have been numerous proposals of energy harvesting applications on a meso-scale. It is difficult to quote specific references (many proposed applications are in the form of conceptual design), however these are mostly in the form of energy sufficient skyscrapers and residential buildings. Energy source options include wind, ha-vested by means of innovative project-specific wind turbines – an example is the controversial Strata Tower in London (Environmental Leader, 2010) – sun and vibrations.
