ABSTRACT

Introduction The use of industrial engineering (IE) in healthcare by Frank Gilbreth and others can be traced back as early as 1908; yet opportunities for IEs in healthcare or management engineers have never been greater. Cost and payment challenges have always been with us, but unique to our times is the impending impact of significant staffing shortages just when the baby boomers will need more care than ever. Thus, more than ever before, it is important to utilize resources, specifically highly paid, highly skilled staff, efficiently and effectively.
