Dahlia (Dahlia variabilis) is one of the most popular tuberous plants in the world because of its varied colors of fl ower. In dahlia petals, three fl avonoid pigments have been identifi ed as contributing to fl ower color: anthocyanin for purple, fl avone for pale yellow, and chalcone for yellow. Differences in anthocyanin quantities in petals, resulting in black to pink variation, are important factors in the large diversity of dahlia colors (Fig. 1).
