ABSTRACT

Non-human primates (NHPs) are routinely used to conduct preclinical studies and often represent the sole pharmacologically relevant species for a given drug under development. As such, clinically relevant routes of administration are required to allow assessment under comparable dosing regimens in this species. Vascular infusion, a route of administration required clinically for both small and large molecules, has also been used in preclinical models to provide more-constant blood levels of the test material, whereas the clinical route provides variable levels in the test species (Clarke 1993) or may also be used to overcome problems of local irritation or dosing restrictions (e.g. limits of solubility).
