ABSTRACT

The assessment of asthma control should identify the frequency and/or intensity of asthma-related symptoms. During the process of assessing asthma control, the clinician is able to identify issues that may be contributing to suboptimal control. Categorizing the patient’s level of asthma control may be used as a means of educating the patient about the disease and establishing treatment aims. Categorizing a patient’s level of asthma control can be useful to facilitate communication between clinicians, for educating the patient as well as for use in research. Patients with asthma should be encouraged to engage in all aspects of physical activity. The composite “scores” of asthma control using validated patient questionnaires with or without lung function measurement have been widely used in research and may be used in a clinical setting. The Asthma Control Test is another commonly used questionnaire for the assessment of asthma control.
