ABSTRACT
Like many things American, our roots are closely tied to England. This also includes the model for law enforcement. The evolution of the cop culture throughout the history of American policing would be incomplete without an understanding of its origin. Although both organizational objectives are grounded in providing domestic public safety services, they have moved toward different directions in terms of mission and organizational structure. This point of departure will demonstrate the value of examining the history and development of policing in the United States.
