ABSTRACT

Linked to the transport industry and included in this type of need are the Air Traffic Controllers (ATC), whose profession emerged after World War II, in response to a significant increase in aviation safety demands in order to help pilots with the navigation, rational use of the controlled airspace and ultimately to prevent incidents and accidents with aircrafts. His main function is to keep a safe, regular and efficient air traffic flow, through information processing (Ministério da Defesa, Brasil, 2009). In reason of the life dealing responsibilities and short time decision making demands, the air traffic controller has been classified as one of the most stressful professions. Besides that, the work schedule has been acknowledged as a contributing factor to acute and chronic health problems, and also to stress and its associated errors (Edwards et al. 2012).
