ABSTRACT

In order to better understand the state of safety management for Rehabilitation and Maintenance Projects in Portugal and Brazil, this study tries to compare the results of two studies carried out independently in those countries and understand if main findings are corroborating the international literature. The fist one falls within the scope of a master thesis in sustainable construction and rehabilitation developed at the University of Minho, where a questionnaire was given to 57 actors, including owners, designers and contractors in the field of rehabilitation, with the objective of identifying their perspectives on the key factors that affect safety in rehabilitation and possible solutions for better safety management. It was concluded that the lack of technical expertise in organization and planning, lack of communication, and lack of skilled labor appear to be the main factors related to flaws in safety coordination and management of this type of work.
