ABSTRACT

The eye fundus is a window to analyze the microvasculature in vivo since retinal vascular imaging techniques provide the means to observe the retinal structures and the retinal microcirculation in a noninvasive manner. The retinal vessel tree is affected by the same diseases as the rest of the vasculature, so that an analysis of retinal vascular changes helps in the diagnosis of several pathologies that affect the vasculature, such as hypertension or diabetes. The generalized use of nonmydriatic retinographs in hospitals and health-care centers allows the early detection of these microvascular abnormalities and the analysis of their evolution over time.
