ABSTRACT
Most forest trees draw water and nutrients from the soil through fungi associated with their root systems. This symbiotic association, called mycorrhizas, contributes to water and mineral nutrition, and root protection. In return, the fungus receives photosynthetic products necessary for its growth and development (Smith and Read 2008).
