ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an estimate of the farm energy budget in Canada and discusses the role of farm energy use in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agriculture. Although the discussion and examples cited are for Canada, many of the principles should apply to mechanized agriculture in most other countries. Energy use in agriculture is at a nexus point in a number of global challenges. The research and policy challenges identified in this chapter are addressed under five energy issues: GHG emissions, energy supply, global food security, biofuel feedstock crops and adaptation to climate change (CC).
