ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Large-dimension expansion model tests were conducted to study the swelling deformation behavior of expansive soil and the effect of geogrid confinement. The results indicate that under the water-infiltration conditions, geogrid confinement substantially decreases the lateral swelling deformation of expansive soil, but it has little influence on vertical displacement. The confinement degree on lateral swelling deformation is related to geogrid type and strength. In comparison with expansive soil without geogrid, the uniaxial HDPE50 geogrid, the HDPE80 geogrid, and the biaxial SS30 geogrid reduces lateral expansion by approximately 37% to 70%, 65% to 83%, and 46% to 80%, respectively.
