ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Taking a RCC gravity dam for example, nonlinear frictional model developed in ABAQUS software was used to simulate the penetrated crack surface under different probability levels of aftershocks. The dynamic response of gravity dam with a penetrated crack at the slope change on the downstream face under aftershock was studied. The residual displacement control algorithm on the dam crest was taken as a criterion to decide whether the dam was stable, and the largest aftershock that the dam could withstand was obtained from the results of numerical analyses. Results also show reservoir water level has great effect on the safety of dam in aftershock. It is necessary to drop water level below the crack location after main shock.
