ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: A polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) degrading bacterium HP was isolated using PCBs as sole carbon source and energy source from contaminated sites. Phenotypic features, physiological and chemotaxonomic characteristics, and phylogenetic analysis of 16s rDNA sequence revealed that the isolate belongs to the genus of Pseudomonas. The results of Detection of bphA1 gene of HP indicate that the isolate may express this gene. Strain HP could also degrade some PAHs and other environmental pollutants when provided as sole carbon and energy sources. Gas chromatography analysis of individual congeners in Aroclor 1260 following a 4-week incubation showed 78.3% degradation of PCBs with the need for yeast extraction as a substrate.
