ABSTRACT

Having discussed the drivers of land-use and land-cover change, possible conicts over land, and their adverse effects in the previous chapter, here we introduce selected solutions to mitigate competition for land and to aid meeting future demands without compromising either development or nature. Before moving to specic examples, we contextualize land management within a sustainable development framework and present complexities associated with sustainable land management. Because many of the solutions to abate competition for land claim to be “sustainable,” we briey discuss the intricacies of sustainability as a concept.
