ABSTRACT

In response to the overwhelming challenges facing conventional water and sanitation technologies (Chapter 1), the appropriate technologies movement has looked for a way to do things differently and rethink the technology in order to improve water and sanitation; reduce the impact on the environment; and cut equipment, operation, and maintenance costs. Appropriate technologies improve environmental and economic sustainability in the water sector in developed and developing countries, but in the latter they also contribute to social empowerment and set the scene for autonomous technological development.
