ABSTRACT

A little story… The majority of us make implicit assumptions that the rate of change in the happenings of our daily lives is fairly static. We get up, brush our teeth, think about breakfast, make coffee, get dressed, and dash out of the house or apartment to work or school with little variation. Our assumption is that we will, with very little deviation, repeat this scenario over and over until we intentionally plan to change it. And most of the time, we’re right. But sometimes we’re not. So even thinking about preparing for the big-impact-but-unlikely to happen events is itself unlikely, or as Seth Godin quipped, “Resilience, the ability to shift and respond to change, comes way down the list of the things we often consider” (Seth Godin’s blog, April 26, 2013). And resilience, the ability to thrive, is precisely what we need in uncertain times such as these.
