ABSTRACT

Pediatric providers should tailor history and physical examination details based upon the age and developmental status of the patient. The pediatric physical examination varies from that of the adult patient in significant ways. Due to the developmental needs of the pediatric patient, especially in the first few years of life, a careful approach is warranted. It should be stated that a pediatric physical examination performed by a practitioner will differ from patient to patient; flexibility is often the key to obtaining subtle or otherwise hidden clues as to underlying pathology. Age plays a significant factor in what pathology may be present on physical examination. The younger the patient, the more likely congenital anomalies are a part of the differential diagnosis. With the significant proliferation of technology such as ‘smartphones’, readily available digital video or pictures may be a helpful adjunct to the physical examination.
