In the light of steady increases in electricity, gas and oil prices, improving energy efficiency and gaining energy independence has become an important goal for many hoteliers in regards to investments for greater sustainability. This article examine energy auditing process is and the basic application of online energy audit tools available to hoteliers. The discussion evolves from the analysis of environmental emissions (e.g., carbon emissions measurement and mitigation) to the inputs (e.g., embodied energy in construction methods and choice of material). Particular attention is then given to the principles of sustainable hotel design, which is rooted to low-energy usage with examples of best practices. Recommendations are made regarding steps required by the hospitality industry in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
