ABSTRACT

Measurement of intraocular pressure alone is insufficient to diagnose or exclude glaucoma, and visual field damage is not investigated for glaucomatous deterioration when there is no suspicion of the disease. The optic nerve (ON) originates in the retinal ganglion cells of the retina. When a patient has no visual complaint, the only simple way to recognize or suspect glaucoma is evaluation of the optic nerve head (ONH) and the retinal nerve fiber layer. The prelaminar, laminar, and retrolaminar portions of the ON are referred to as the ONH or optic disc or papilla. The size of the ONH varies considerably between eyes, but it is typically similar for the two eyes of the same subject. When the ONH is evaluated for glaucomatous damage, partial depth loss of the rim tissue should be considered as loss of neuroretinal rim.
