ABSTRACT
In this chapter, I discuss the past and future possibilities of multistage testing (MST) in an educational context. I first provide some historical background on the origins of adaptive testing and MST in education. A three-stage design is discussed to illustrate some additional advantages of an MST design by considering the use of item generation methods and automated scoring of constructed-response items.
