The term nutraceuticals is a linguistic combination of nutrient and pharmaceutical. A nutraceutical is defined as a substance that may be considered a food or part of a food and provides medical or health benefits, including the prevention and treatment of disease. Nutraceuticals belong to a diverse product category with various synonyms and are used internationally. Metallonutraceuticals may create an environment for new products that promise novel solutions to health-related issues. Metallonutraceuticals will play an important role in future therapeutic developments. The greatest challenges concern public policy and regulation. The research and development of products providing health benefits should be encouraged, while truthful, nonmisleading communications about these products protect public health and maintain public confidence (1).
