ABSTRACT

While general use of the Internet and technology has become a controversial issue of contention when it comes to individuals under the supervision of the corrections system, the use and abuse of social networking websites by inmates and staff has recently come into the media spotlight. While literature and media coverage on this particular topic is scant, as it is a new phenomenon, it is important to include what is available for the purposes of this book. This chapter will examine three particular categories of issues now faced by our corrections system as a result of the Internet social networking websites and the current attempts to maintain control: restricting Internet use for sex offenders, cellphones and social networking, and constitutional rights and social networking.
