ABSTRACT

Taking Samples From an Artifact For studying the materials present in an artifact as bulk material, in a corrosion layer, or in a layered structure of a painting, polychromed sculpture or mural painting information gained by photographic techniques in the X-ray, Uv, and IR range is often not sufficient. Mainly a two-dimensional projection of all layers is generated, which does not allow any specific conclusions concerning the materials or compounds present. Only the preparation of a

cross section on properly sampled specimens, where the sequence of all layers is preserved, delivers the desired information [1,11].
