ABSTRACT

Many of the papers in this book were eminently technical, showing the relationship between the exposition to several pollutants, and namely soot generated by vehicular traffic, and the damages observed on monuments. Restoring the ancient buildings is the first, immediate reaction we may have in mind to restitute them to their ancient splendor, but this is often costly. Moreover, if the monuments continue to be exposed to the pollution generated by heavy traffic in the vicinity, the same damages may be generated again in few decades. New restoration may become difficult, because any time strata of stone and materials must be netted out, and they are not an infinite resource.
