ABSTRACT

In all living cells, ions play fundamental roles. e intracellular ion composition of a cell is tightly controlled, and also the cells of an organism are situated in a carefully regulated environment, i.e. the tissue. However, the fluid compartments of the human body differ considerably in their composition. Figure 24.1 displays the typical ion concentrations in the intracellular and extracellular space and illustrates the tools at the disposal of a prototypic cell for managing its intracellular composition.
