ABSTRACT

The influence of anisotropy on the mechanical behaviour of saturated soils has been studied since the 1980s. There are several saturated elasto-plastic models that can account for the effect of evolving material fabric (see, for example, Banerjee & Yousif, 1986 and Wheeler et al. 2003). In most of these models, anisotropy is taken into account by assuming a yield surface in the principal stress space that is distorted or rotated with respect to the hydrostatic axis, where the amount of distortion or rotation depends on the accumulated plastic volumetric and/or shear strains.
