ABSTRACT

Our present energy policy, still mainly based on burning of fossil fuels, inevitably poses a serious concern due to the CO2-related global warming (see Figure 3.1).

Accordingly, efforts aimed to assure an efcient use of renewable energy sources, as well as the replacement of internal combustion engines with electric motors for the development of sustainable vehicles, such as hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and ultimately, full electric vehicles (EVs), are in progress worldwide (see Figure 3.2). Another advantage of the electric engine over the combustion engine is in its higher fuel efciency (see Figure 3.3).
