ABSTRACT

Diabetes is a morbid condition characterized by metabolic abnormalities and long-term complications involving the eyes, kidneys, nerves, and blood vessels. The prevalence of diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes, is rapidly increasing throughout the world, and it is becoming the leading cause of new blindness, end-stage renal disease (ESRD), and nontraumatic amputations. Nevertheless, cardiovascular disease is the major cause of premature mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes, and hypertension is a major contributor to the development of cardiovascular and renal disease in these patients (1).
