ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the state-of-the-art methodologies, tools, and systems from the biomedical perspective, focusing on the collection and processing of biological signals. It discusses the architecture of such systems, the acquisition and processing of biosignals, and the main methodologies used for emotion extraction. The chapter provides the statistics and results of the most important methodologies and systems found in literature. It describes the concept of affective computing from the Physiology and Biomedical Perspective. Affective computing is the science that deals with the research and development of special systems, techniques, and devices that can identify, record, interpret, process, and simulate various shades of human emotion. The technology is used in two distinct areas: information collection and control systems. Gathering information provides data aimed at incessant presentation and the best comprehension of the present situation, or the evolution of system parameters. The aim of affective computing applications is mainly sorting out the user’s emotions, expressions or physiological responses.
