ABSTRACT

A major challenge to reducing our dependence on fossil fuel resources is the production of sustainable liquid fuels. Ethanol is amongst the most wellknown liquid fuels and has been used for car engines since the late 1800s (Rothmann et al. 1983). Ethyl alcohol, or chemically, C2H5OH or EtOH, can be produced from renewable biomass materials and is therefore considered a ‘green’ fuel. Its utilisation as a transportation fuel can help reduce both the consumption of crude oil and the associated production of greenhouse gases.
