ABSTRACT

The goal of the IACUC is to ensure the humane care and use of animals in research, testing and teaching. Additional goals are for the IACUC to remain in compliance with regulations while maintaining exibility to meet the unique needs of the institution’s academic and research mission. There are four fundamental components for the effective and ef- cient functioning of the IACUC. They are: 1) active participation of the IACUC members to meet investigator’s needs in conducting research; 2) participation of community members to bring transparency and public conscience; 3) participation of AVs to provide appropriate medical care and monitor the well-being of animals and 4) rm commitment from the institution to comply with regulations and their Assurance (if applicable) by establishing a committee to oversee the institution’s animal program, facilities, and research and educational projects involving the use of animals.
