ABSTRACT

The AWAR, the PHS Policy, and the Guide require institutions to provide training for personnel engaged in animal research. Since the second edition of this book, additional information on the recommended content of training courses has become available in the eighth edition of the Guide. Many symposia and seminars have been sponsored by national professional organizations to address these issues and a great deal of resource material has become available. Numerous methods have arisen to provide training, which range from one-on-one sessions to online tutorials. In response to the demand for increased training, many institutions have created specic positions for trainers as part of the IACUC staff. IACUCs increasingly utilize training and retraining as a means to achieve compliance, especially in response to episodes of noncompliance encountered with research personnel.
