ABSTRACT

The AWAR (§2.31,c,2) require IACUCs to inspect “all of the research facility’s animal facilities, including animal study areas” for species regulated by the AWAR. The PHS Policy (IV,B,2) requires any and all animal facilities and areas to be inspected at least every 6  months including satellite facilities and surgical areas. The PHS Policy (IV,A,1) also requires adherence to the Guide (p. 25), which recommends inspection of the animal facilities and animal care and use areas at least annually or more often as required (e.g., by the AWA and the PHS Policy). The Guide and AWAR specify requirements for surgical facilities and procedures for conducting survival surgery on rodents and AWAR-regulated species. The IACUC must approve all surgical procedures involving animals to ensure that appropriately trained individuals conduct the research in a humane manner. This chapter is intended to help the reader to comply with these regulations and recommendations.
