ABSTRACT

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology combined with sensor networks presents potential for a variety of applications including applications in healthcare. An RFID and sensor system consists of a tag and a reader. The tag is usually attached to a tracking device and the reader is used for tracking (sensing) and can collect necessary information. The healthcare applications for such a system are numerous, including patient monitoring and tracking and assisting individuals with physical challenges. This chapter describes a prototype project that integrates both sensor networks and RFID technologies. The project addresses in-home medicine monitoring for elderly patients.
