ABSTRACT

River Gang and its tributaries are subject to regular flooding resulting in loss of life and properties and unimaginable sufferings of people living in the flood plains. In this paper, authors have discussed the flood disasters in main Ganga and Kosi-a tributay of Ganga-in India in the vicinity of the mighty barrages built on them. The recent flood disasters in Kedarnath town and temple on the bank of Mandakini river-also a tributary of Ganga-are described. Various river training measures, adopted for flood protection and the safety of the barrages, and the reasons for the failure of conventional training measures are pointed out. Some additional preventive measures have been recommended at the end of the paper.
