ABSTRACT

Spur dikes are training structures used for river banks protection. The failure of these structures is due to excessive local scour. Velocity measurements were conducted to investigate the effect of spur dike location on the flow field around a spur dike located in a 90∘. ADV apparatus with 50HZ sampling rate was used to measure the 3D instantaneous velocities. The spur dike was located in three different locations along the bend Θ=30∘,45∘,60∘. Analysis of data indicates a considerable difference in flow field between different spur dike locations. The bursting events probabilities, third order moments, turbulent kinetic energy flux and Reynolds shear stresses are investigated. The amplification region of the latter parameters was adjacent to the tip of the spur dike and propagates to the downstream. Results showed that the turbulent parameters such as the bed shear stresses and probability of the sweep and ejection events are smallest for Θ=60∘. For a spur dike at Θ=60∘ in a sharp bend, the amount of scour dimensions are least.
