ABSTRACT

In this chapter, an approach to goal setting based on the use of the World Health Organization (WHO)’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) (WHO, 2001) is presented. Goal setting is a process that includes the decision of what needs to be accomplished (the goal) and the formulation of a plan to achieve that desired result. It includes the identification of the goal areas in different hierarchical levels and clarification of the corresponding expected outcome. To do this, information that helps understand the patient’s problems and needs comprehensively is necessary (Hurn, Kneebone, & Cropley, 2006). This is the essential foundation of successful goal setting (Rauch, Cieza, & Stucki, 2008).
