ABSTRACT

In Chapter 3, Siegert and colleagues described how patients in a rehabilitation environment evaluate their current situation and determine the discrepancy between their current and previous state. Patients seek information to determine what is possible and what activities and attributes would help them regain the state of their idealized self. Parents of children with disabilities face unique challenges as they often lack a reference point for their child’s potential; it can be difficult for them to know what is possible for their children. While the adult with a sustained injury works to regain their previous level of functioning, parents of children with developmental disabilities create their vision of the future based on what they imagine is possible for their child.
