ABSTRACT

When an elliptical excision is closed, the two edges of the excision are advanced to meet each other in order to close the defect. However, in certain body locations and for the excision of larger lesions, more complex closures may be necessary, involving more movement of the skin to effect closure. This chapter considers some more advanced surgical techniques, including crescentic excisions, M-plasty, and some simple flaps. Careful thought, preparation, and marking of the skin are essential to achieve the best results. Experienced carpenters understand this principle-mark twice, but only cut once.
