ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the mechanisms and protocols developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.1 time-sensitive networking (TSN) task group, previously known as the audio/video bridging (AVB) task group. The chapter shows the term TSN/AVB network to reflect both the new target markets of time-sensitive networks, such as industrial control applications, and the original target markets of audio and video applications. It explains the IEEE 1722 standard, which defines Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) layer 2 protocols for TSN/AVB and IEEE 802.1AS and shows the improvements to it. A TSN/AVB network is composed of two types of components: end points and bridges. End points and bridges are connected to each other with bidirectional communication links, and for the sake of simplicity, the chapter shows that these links are either 100 Mbit/s or 1 Gbit/s Ethernet connections and omit that the 802.1 technology supports also other communication technologies through well-defined interfaces.
