ABSTRACT

The Highway Addressable Remote Transducer (HART) communications protocol is one of the first fieldbuses to appear on the market. The HART protocol is nowadays one of the most deployed protocols for industrial communications with the largest number of installed nodes. This chapter discusses the classic International Standards Organization/Open Systems Interconnection (ISO/OSI) model limited to the physical, data link, network, and application layers has been used to identify and shows the main requirements for each level from the industrial point of view. Security is a very critical aspect in industrial communications solutions. For this reason, WirelessHART has been designed in order to have a security level comparable with wired solutions. The Wi-Analys tool is a wireless traffic analyzer available from the Hart Communication Foundation (HCF) consortium, that is, the same task force that also maintains HART and WirelessHART specifications. The transport layer of WirelessHART supports both an acknowledged transfer mechanism and an unacknowledged mechanism for the transfer of process data.
