ABSTRACT

However, a less studied application concerning the use of lime in earthen architecture was as a stabilizing substance. Since ancient times, small proportions of lime were used in combination with earth in order to increase its mechanical strength as well as its resistance towards weather elements such as rain, wind or snow. The use of lime has been documented, for example, in walls and mud coatings from the archaeological zone of Paquimé (Fig. 1), as well as in most of the foundations of Tenochtitlan, in the center of Mexico City.
